On Thursday February 8, the Agile Consortium is hosting the first meeting of the “Works Council in Transition” working group. This meeting is intended for Works Council members, former Works Council members, future Works Council members and transformation leads.

One of the most radical reorganisations a Works Council will ever face is the company-wide introduction of Agile and DevOps. Sometimes this goes smoothly and a big step toward Business Agility is taken. Often it gets bogged down in yet another attempt.

Complicating factor is that the Works Councils Act (WOR) offers few tools to keep a grip on an Agile/DevOps transformation. While no two transformations are the same, case studies from other organisations are excellent to use for inspiration. The facilitators of this meeting have done research on this topic and will share this with the participants.

A counterintuitive point is that in an Agile/DevOps transformation, it is better for a Works Council to step on the gas pedal rather than the brake pedal in the interest of employees and the organisation. As a linking pin between management and employees, a Works Council could help increase support, increase scope and shorten lead time.

Purpose of this working group

To provide a platform for Works Council members and transformation leads to:

– share their experiences about participation processes in transforming organisations

– strengthen the role of Works Councils in transforming organisations

– further develop the ‘Works Council in transition body of knowledge’.

This body of knowledge currently includes the Works Council Manifesto, its principles and leading and lagging indicators.

The plans for 2023 and beyond

– Organise 2 or 3 physical Lean Coffee meetings per year. Physical because of the often confidential and sensitive topics.

– Publish articles on the evolved body of knowledge.

Program Thursday, February 8

– 17.00-17.30 walk-in

– 17.30-18.15 block 1 Explanation Works Council Manifesto and genesis from research

– 18.15-19.00 meal and networking

– 19.00-20.00 Block 2 Lean Coffee

– 20.00-20.30 block 3 Identification of topics for Lean Coffee meetings and conclusion

We apply The Chatham House Rule at the meetings: “participants are free to use the information received, but neither the identity nor the affiliation of the speaker(s), nor that of any other participant, may be revealed.”
